THE HOUSE
THE BARN

HISTORY
Waterside House and Barn have belonged to the Finsthwaite Estate which has been in the same family since the Dissolution of the Monasteries 1536. Waterside is steeped in history as it is known as the home of the “Finsthwaite Princess”. Clementina Johannes Sobieski Douglass was the alleged illegitimate daughter of the Young Pretender (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and Clementina Walkenshawe.

EXPLORE HISTORY

She was taken to safety by one of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s men, Captain James Douglas, after retreating from defeat at Carlisle. Clementina died young, aged 24, and was buried in the churchyard at Finsthwaite (less than a mile walk from Waterside) on 16 May 1771. A simple cross can be found which reads ‘Behold Thy King Cometh’. Her story has spawned many rumors and wild allegations, involving, at their most extreme, exhumation.
